Life should be fragrant / Roof top to the basement
~ Kite by U2
Our Daughter of Air is hanging back, she is hovering over a thing and considering her strategy of attack. Kiting is a flight skill hawks utilize when hunting ~ holding in place while scanning for prey. This works to their advantage because, if the hawk is lucky, the unsuspecting prey has no clue it's about to become lunch. There is no rustling grass or snapping twig to give the hawk's presence away, insuring success.

Upright, our Daughter of Air is working a plan actively, she is initiating Phase One of whatever and eager to get going. With this left leaning, she is perhaps a bit uncertain. The prey, or goal, isn't exactly in sight or fully formed. So she hangs and waits until the right opportunity presents itself.

And that all works well if one is paying attention, not letting a mind wander too far from the task. Or, worse yet, not acting in a timely manner when that opportunity arises.

Hang back if you need to, but keep an eye on things. It would be a shame to let lunch go.

less than

I had a match, but she had a lighter
I had a flame, but she had a fire
I was bright, but she was much brighter
I was high, but she was the sky

~ Mexico by Cake
When Strength is leaning back, it's a fair indication of feeling Less Than. In this image, the cat, that soft animal part of being human, seems to be in control. Instinct seems to be the rule of the day. Cats will scratch when mishandled or attacked. Cats will nap the day away (they do need their 16 hours daily). Cats are a superior species feeling no real need for humans unless there's a can of food that needs opening. (Well. It often seems that way until they cuddle up for a nap with you.) Cats are formidable solo hunters, making a blood sport of their prey before snapping the spine and presenting it to their humans. Intact, it's a gift. Eviscerated, it might rain.

The thing is, our feral natures seem to be leading the way today. And that's fine. In some cases. Following instincts are an important part of being human. It's when all one acts on is instinct that things could get out of control. It makes one less than human.

Follow your instincts if you must, but remember you're not the only person on the planet. And not only are there others to consider, but your integrity, rightness with Self, that needs to be maintained. You don't need to be the lion tamer, but giving the right amount of attention to your feral self may keep you steady for today.

I got no time for livin' / Yes, I'm workin' all the time
~ Working Man by Rush
Geez! What a card to pull for Friday! Well. There's work to do. Probably with the company of others. The 3 of Earth is no solitary effort. You may have your part to do, but there are others involved and those others might be better suited to their tasks in completing said work. Attempting to do it all, as this right-leaning 3 of Earth suggests, will have you falling short of deadlines. Or if met, with half-assed results at best.

Slow down. Dial it back a bit. Know there are others in your team ready to perform those tasks you're less than brilliant at. I won't say they'll be eager (it is Friday, after all), but you do not, I repeat do not, have to do it all alone. Once the work is done and in good order, kick back and have that beer (or tea). The work is done and it's time for fun!

the anti-celebration

Shake me down, not a lot of people left around
~ Shake Me Down by Cage The Elephant
*sigh* With the 4 of Fire in reverse, it seems a ho-hum, hum-drum day. There's simply nothing to celebrate. Barely a reason to raise a smile. Let's break it down, shall we?

The element is Fire. Typically warm, blazing hot, if not careful. Fire gives a sense of community since it's what folks have gathered around for centuries ~ especially in darkness. We come to the fire to be warm, cook food, and tell stories. Maybe milestones are celebrated around the fire. Today, the warmth you need might have to be self-generated. And you don't have a match. Which means relying on some prehistoric skills to catch a spark.

Now, on the number 4. This number is usually associated with structure, stability, order, and organization. It's a good solid number for, say, a hearth or fire pit, because then the fire is safely contained. With this reversal, it could go two ways. Either the fire has blazed out of control and folks are running in all directions to avoid getting burned. Or it's completely squelched, not enough space to burn, wet wood, ineffectual sparking skills.

The thing to do today is observe. Don't force a celebration when there isn't the energy for one to occur. Tend to your fire without letting it go out or get out of control. Keep your eyes fixed on the sun.

Behold the atom I preferred / To all the lists of clay!
~ Choice by Emily Dickinson
What a fine day for The Lovers to make an appearance! Y'know, big wedding and all that. But that's not the focus of this arcana's appearance today. Well. I take that back it sort of is and it sort of isn't.

As humans on this plane of existence, we are often presented with choices. The Lovers cards throughout history show the choosing of one person above all others. (Go ahead. Do an image search. Great fun.) However, the union of duality ~ woman and man, female and male, this and that ~ has a third element, a force overseeing, tending to, that union. That third element is often depicted as an angel or cupid or a priest marrying the couple. (And why is the priest's hand on the man's shoulder in some reassuring manner?) Making a decision marks the beginning of a new life. The new life requires acknowledgement and support. Ordained by God Herself or, simply, Love.

Making a choice, whether large or small, means all other options fall away. Making a choice means seeing only the choice you've made, thus making life a little easier. The focus can then be put to living in that decision, marriage, or union. Not necessarily to the exclusion of all else. Life is so big and there is much to do. But making good clear choices helps.

Enjoy the live streaming replay of the wedding. Know the choices you make today are those you'll be living with tomorrow. Try to make good ones. If nothing else, an angel's got your back.

walk away

I'm going away but I'm going to be back when
It's time to walk away and start over again

~ Walk Away by Tom Waits
Some things simply can not be fixed. At least, that's what the 5 of Air thinks today. The figure walking away has had enough. He has given himself to a task repeatedly with little or no results. With the 5 of Air leaning left, it's that definition of insanity ~ the doing of a thing over and over expecting different results.

It would be better to follow that fellow and walk away. Why continue with the same fruitless actions? Maybe you've been working at a project that simply isn't getting off the ground ~ despite planning, despite good intentions, despite the time and money invested. It's time to give your pride a pat on the head and change direction. Could it be you've been trying to communicate, connect, with someone for a very long time? (Remember: Air is the element of the mind and communications.) You've sent e-mails, letters, commented on their FB or IG posts only to get the theatrical cricket chirping in response. Well, it's a fool's game to continually extend one's self when there's nothing given in return.

Tend to yourself today. Release whatever's not working. It's better to walk away now before you feel dead inside from over thinking, over extending, over working. Why beat a dead horse? Move on and get a new mount. Bigger and better things are in store.

fiery abodes

Here's your ticket pack your bag / Time for jumping
overboard / The transportation is here

~ Burning Down the House by Talking Heads
I'm learning that phrase about getting on like a house on fire means not what I mean here, but here's what I mean: The Chariot will burn through the day like a house on fire. This arcana is often associated with setting aside emotions and general whininess to get shit done. The Chariot is in control ~ dogs on the leash Cesar Milan style, horses reined in neatly. And all moving according to plan. Even if the plan isn't moving along smoothly.

It may be a day of maneuvering deftly between many tasks with one, overarching goal in mind. That goal is determined by you. And very little will get in your way of reaching that goal.

However, the other, not-so-nice thing about The Chariot is how you can be so focused on your end game you forget there are other people with their own agendas and, well, feelings. Which seem a bit messy when all you know is breathing and your intended goal.

Yes, do your Work today ~ whatever that is. Just remember there are other people in the world with feelings and their own godly tasks. Use tact. Maintain your integrity. Be polite, but firm when necessary, and we'll all get on like a house on fire.

Already we'll float on
Now don't you worry we'll all float on alright

~ Float On by Modest Mouse
Our Son of Earth isn't exactly en pointe today. In fact, he is completely upended and unable to function in a reliable, let alone graceful, manner. When our Son of Earth doesn't have his feet on the ground things seem rather floaty indeed. He can't find his feet, things don't make sense, and it's difficult to move ahead in the muddled situation. And so he just sort of drifts along. Not a typical Son of Earth action.

The first order of business in floaty situations, is to get grounded. This is an Earth card. It's important to remember what planet you're on in order to move about effectively. To right the energies of a reversed Son of Earth means stopping and assessing things as you go. It requires attention and presence.

Slow down. Take a moment to get your bearings. If you can put off a thing for today, then do so. It might be better to let certain situations simmer awhile rather than try to move them in any sensible direction. It will be like herding cats. Not worth the exhaustion. Keep it simple and it may all make sense tomorrow.

breaking open

I tell you this to break your heart,
by which I mean only that it break open and never
close again

~ Lead by Mary Oliver
The time for deliberation is over. The time for closing off feelings and emotions has come to an end. When the 2 of Air is in reverse, it signals a moving forward. Finally.

Because, it's likely, you've been sitting with a decision or thought a long while. During that time, there's been the weighing of one option over another, trying to get a broad picture on the consequences. Which no one can ever fully know. The future often unfolds in the direction you look. That's the thing of decisions. Once a decision is made, some commitment bonded, the path becomes clearer. You know what to do.

Releasing your mind from this intense focus, breaks open a heart. You are better able to act with some intention instead of vacillating over this or that.

Let it be so. The thinking has been done now let your heart and body put some soul into the endeavor by embracing and acting upon the thought or decision. There's work to do.

sweet dreams

Sweet dreams are made of this / Who am I to disagree?
~ Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics
The Moon is leaning hard into Aquarius today. What are you chasing? What airy plans are you attempting? When The Moon is in this exaggerated state, you find yourself ranging off into odd directions ~ places not necessarily helpful. You're eager to go, but things aren't fully formed just yet ~ the road ain't paved, got the cart with no horse. Manifestation becomes a bumpy road at best without a few things in place.

And The Moon marks time, knows cycles. In her waxing and waning we can take steady comfort in knowing when to do a thing. You can't push the tides. The Moon does that. Your job is to sometimes wait. Despite the eagerness.

Where's The Moon today? Almost at the third quarter and waning. We are moving toward darkness. What has fruited is now going toward decay, dissemination. It simply might not be a good time to get things off the ground right now. Wait awhile until the New Moon when a seed can be planted. One that will bear better fruit without half the hassle.

mind the pavement

They paved paradise / Put up a parking lot
~ Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell
Dusting off the soapbox ~ because I don't typically do the soapbox thing. We are into this lusty month of May in my neck of the woods. Trees are burgeoning, bless their roots. Daffodils are blooming as are tulips and muscari and bluebells. Beauty abounds. And if left alone, it'll probably do fine in continuing to be beautiful.

However, we humans have a way of mucking things up by thinking we're smarter than Nature. We think we can improve upon what Nature does organically by modifying or synthesizing or purifying what we feel are the good parts of a thing. Sometimes, that works out just fine. Other times, one wonders what good can really come of our arrogant behavior. Because, Nature works from a sense of wholeness. There's a reason the other stuff is in the mix.

And so in strolls The Devil. The energy of this arcana is one of control, superiority, entitlement. The Devil sets you up with grand ideas and then pulls the rug out from under you, laughing at the prat fall. Pride is a fine thing to cultivate, but arrogance is better left at the door when dealing with Nature. Because, like any mother, She will let you test a few boundaries ~ it's a part of one's growth to do so. Go too far, however, and you'll learn lessons in unexpected ways. The difference between The Devil and Mother Nature is this: She'll stick around after the fall while The Devil hits the road. With your money and time.

Be mindful of your impact on the world today. Be not arrogant or entitled. Let humility be a fine guide. Or deal with The Devil. Your choice.

lighten up

I want to be improbable beautiful and afraid of nothing,
as though I had wings.

~ Starlings in Winter by Mary Oliver
The 9 of Fire is here, upended, and that is a good thing. Because today we can all relax a little. Maybe the situation has been a bit tense lately. You've been on guard or waiting for the other shoe to drop or so proactively defensive as to be offensive.

Lighten up, buttercup. Maintain those healthy boundaries, but don't shut out the world. It's too much work and you've been beaten down enough by life. Find some wings and put them on. Hone in on your joy and let it lift you. Be afraid of nothing.
