I've been reading this book which has interesting insights into emotions. Sadness is an indication for a need to release. Sadness isn't a "bad" emotion. In fact, as far as Karla McLaren is concerned, there are no "bad" emotions. We do, however, have a million distractions to avoid these weighty energies. While Karla doesn't suggest quitting all of them cold turkey, she does suggest you take a closer look at why you're grabbing the TV controls or cell phone or chocolate. Because these distractions keep you from engaging in the emotion you're afraid of.
Today, if it's possible, sit with how you feel. If you're picking up a thing that keeps you from being with that emotion, take just one moment to realize what you're doing. Typically, the 5 of Water is deeply connected with sadness. Let tears come if they want, let the deep sigh be one of release. In these small ways you may find some sense of peace and restoration. Don't let sad be the new bad.
