holding tears

Holding back the tears
Chance for me to escape from all I know

~ Holding Back the Years by Simply Red
The 5 of Water held back is a deep, sad sigh. The spilled cups seem to be the center of one's focus. And, oddly, though there's a sense of holding back, holding on, the act of maintaining that energy is draining.

I've been reading this book which has interesting insights into emotions. Sadness is an indication for a need to release. Sadness isn't a "bad" emotion. In fact, as far as Karla McLaren is concerned, there are no "bad" emotions. We do, however, have a million distractions to avoid these weighty energies. While Karla doesn't suggest quitting all of them cold turkey, she does suggest you take a closer look at why you're grabbing the TV controls or cell phone or chocolate. Because these distractions keep you from engaging in the emotion you're afraid of.

Today, if it's possible, sit with how you feel. If you're picking up a thing that keeps you from being with that emotion, take just one moment to realize what you're doing. Typically, the 5 of Water is deeply connected with sadness. Let tears come if they want, let the deep sigh be one of release. In these small ways you may find some sense of peace and restoration. Don't let sad be the new bad.

riding high

I'm back in the saddle again
~ Back in the Saddle by Aerosmith
The 6 of Fire's got swagger today. When this card makes its appearance there's the smell of Victory in the air. Hurdles have been jumped, fiery hoops leaped through, obstacles eradicated and the winner is on top. You're the winner, by the way.

Maybe you're emerging from a murky moment or two with clarity and assurance. Maybe there's been some really rough days this past week. Well, you can forget about all that today, kitten. Because the 6 of Fire is here to reward you with accolades. You can stand tall and proud knowing the worst has been endured. And not only will you survive, but also thrive.

Take possession of your pride. Own who you are today. Don't be arrogant. Don't be smug. Don't rest in false humility. You've been through some shit and you're allowed to be victorious. Take command of the reins and ride high. You are, indeed, back in the saddle.

miss rule

Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

~ Uprising by Muse
The Hierophant has strolled in on its head. When things are upright, they are, well, upright. Traditions followed, rules adhered to, disciplines engaged. It seems we're feeling a bit of the rebel today. Which is fine as long as we're not throwing babies out with bathwater.

With The Hierophant reversed life has be codified to death. Laws, rules, traditions have become confining rather than helpful. It's time to review a few of them. Are they truly serving you? Your family? Your village? Perhaps a few of the rules could be more like guidelines.

This will be a day when you color outside the lines. Don't drive on the wrong side of the road though ~ some rules do keep one intact and shouldn't be ignored or discarded. Go ahead and tweak a few though. Shake up your routine. Take a different route. Make a mess. Or if you usually make a mess, try staying in those lines or acting with precision. I guess you could say it's Opposite Day. So have fun!

bring it on

You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Bringin' on the heartache

~ Bringin' On the Heartbreak by Def Leppard
Okay. Let me tell you from the get go, this is not one of my favorite cards. I can deal with Death and The Tower just fine, but the 3 of Air is a whole other thing. And it's these fearful cards one needs to take a step back from. Break it down a little.

Let's start with the numbers, shall we? 3 is typically social, creative, communicative. The Number 3 likes to have fun. With others. What happened here? In this case, perhaps there's been a gathering of grudges and other hurtful thoughts. Perhaps they've been held too long and there's a strong need to communicate those sentiments to the right person, in the right way.

And that's where the Element of Air swoops in. Air is usually assigned that mercurial, mental realm. If you're not careful, it could be all talk with no emotion to support it. Like the apology that falls short of forgiveness. Speaking words with little meaning.

To add to the mix, the 3 of Air is turned to the right, which in this system means the energies are exaggerated, forced, blown out of proportion. This is where, sometimes, Tarot might be helpful. A card could bring one's awareness to a certain behavior, the usual way of handling situations. This gives one an opportunity to take a different approach. If you normally shout out and spew whatever is on your mind, not caring who hears what or how it's said, it might be a good day to take a moment and listen first. If you're one to hold the words, anger, tears, whatever, it might be better to express those feelings without fear or recrimination. Either way, it's a bold step.

The 3 of Air requires work. Which is an awful lot to ask on a fine Sunday. With a little care and attention I'm fairly certain we'll all get through today unscathed.

I want to thank you falettinme / Be mice elf agin
~ Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) by
Sly & The Family Stone
Where are your people today? You know the ones. Those who you used to ride with, share laughter and tears with. Those who know you so well that even getting back into their company years later, you pick up the threads (or reins) and head out to make more memories. The 3 of Water rarely points to family members in that sort of company. These people are your Compadres, your Tribe, your Besties. You've been without their company for too long.

Maybe you see them everyday, but it's time to do something out of the routine. Plan a thing, go do it. Either way, the point is to find yourself in good company and have fun today. The 3 of Water wants to see you enjoy life. Preferably, with your Peeps. I'm sure you have them on speed dial.

the slow burn

I declare I don't care no more / I'm burning up and
out and / Growing bored

~ Burnout by Greenday
Our Mother of Fire ain't feelin' it today. She is tired, bedraggled, leaning to the left for a long lie down with tea and Netflix. Bingeing on Lost In Space may be her only plan and goal. Perhaps our Mother of Fire has been doing a little too much lately. She's been keeping the hearth fires ablaze. There's been a lot of cooking and tending or paperwork (which burns quite nicely in the blazing hearth fire, come to think of it). Friends stopping in frequently for tea and chats and commiseration (because she likes to lend an ear when she can) has become too much. And today she has simply had enough.

It's mentioned ad nauseum how busy we all are in this world. That we all run at a breakneck pace to keep up with, well, everything. That busy-ness, sadly, is valued above all else. To the point of burnout. It is in this time, one needs to put a stop to the madness and have that lie down. This is a day for calling on some personal boundaries in order to rest and nurture that inner spark before it's doused completely.

Do the bare minimum. Put away the cell phone. Avoid that pernicious social media (except for this, of course). Find a book you've been meaning to read or plug into some streaming TV. Unless there are true emergencies to tend to today, shut the world out and take a break. Why wait for illness to create an enforced rest? Rest today, care more tomorrow. Replenish yourself so you can better serve others.

shine on

Well we all shine on / Like the moon and the stars
and the sun

~ Instant Karma by John Lennon
The 10 of Water is often depicted as a family come together under a rainbow of cups. In this card is a feeling of attainment on all levels ~ physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. No one person is above the others as having that attainment. All worked together and all have an opportunity to enjoy the success.

And you are all brilliant in this moment. Because you're all here together. You can shine in this moment having gone through those less than shiny moments, again, together. Let it be a joyous day! Spend it with those folks who walked with you to that lovely hill top. Whether it's family, good friends, team members, these are the people who saw you through thick and thin. And you helped them along as well. Look out on the fine view! Shine like the celestial bodies! Everyone's a star here today.

a bit of alchemy

You want alchemy / They turn roses into gold
They turn lilacs into honey
They're making love for the peaches

~You Want Alchemy by Kate Bush
It's what Temperance likes to do ~ take one thing and make it another. Like bees making honey from flowers and helping to make more flowers to make more honey. And like the bee, Temperance is a catalyst. Temperance stands in the middle of it all, pulling together bits and pieces. What works comes together to create this new thing. What doesn't is scrapped, possibly for another time. Temperance's aim is to gather the right elements to make gold. Lead has its uses, but gold makes a soul shine.

What do you need to make gold today? Or honey? What do you need to make life feel shiny and sweet? You might have to work with what you've got. If nothing else, Temperance is resourceful. Standing in the middle of things, you might be able to pull from the pile or the swirling events, the few things that matter, the few things that will work together to make a new thing. Like the Alchemist, like the bee. The point is, you are the catalyst for your own day today (it's a Major Arcana card, but just for today, not your whole life ~ keep the perspective) and you can create it any way you like.

Strike a balance and maintain it. Be still despite the hustle and bustle. Be observant, noticing what's working and what's not. Pace yourself and let your demeanor be even and constant. And don't turn down a little honey. Life is meant to be sweet.

holding loosely

There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief

~ All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan
The 4 of Earth keeps it together. Probably a little too closely for comfort. While it's a good idea to maintain what one has, tending boundaries, keeping cash in the account, it's not a good idea to let that maintenance rule one's life to the exclusion of all else. After awhile, the walls get a little too high making for difficult egress into the World.

Yes, spend some time getting those ducks in a row, but know they'll scatter a bit once they get to the pond. At least they're in the pond. And don't they all look like they're having fun ~ ducking under and splashing water? Don't become a warden in your own prison.

lost fire

Precious heart, precious seed, precious life conceived
In a ring of fire, in the sleep of peace
Nothing stops desire for the human beat

~ Mosaic by Patti Smith
The Magician has tricks up the sleeve, but they're not being utilized today. Hidden magic is the worst kind because it lies dormant waiting to be known and used. It is potential wasted and lost, it's the missed opportunity, and blind ignorance. Wake up! At least look up your sleeves.

On days when things seem lack luster, you've got to dredge up your own fairy dust and pixie powder, your own magic. It's a tall order, but manageable. As usual, the process begins with Presence. Be where you are today ~ contentment, sorrow, peace, agitation. Try not to look at any present state as good or bad, but as what it is. The one sure thing is, at either end of the spectrum, the situation is transient and changeable. It's a hard job to view the Big Picture when you're in the middle of it, but it's the next part of the magic you can work. Remember that this too shall pass ~ good or bad. Finally, remember you have work to do in this life. You're here for a reason even if that reason is as clear as mud right now. If you're uncertain what to do, try to do the next thing that makes sense, and then the next. It is a mundane sort of magic that will see you through.

Do not despair. A lost fire is never really lost, but just needs to be fed. Find ways to feed your desire, don't squelch it. Fan that ember into a roaring flame and enjoy the warmth.

It's these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold

~ Heart of Gold by Neil Young
The 2 of Water leaning left shows some form of holding back or disconnection. Perhaps you're distancing yourself from someone, hesitant to say a thing, not expressing love in some way. There may, indeed, be some search for a heart of gold and too many requisites are placed on how that love may manifest. Which makes it difficult to have love.

Love doesn't come with instructions or a menu. You can't pick and choose how love will come to you. Nor can you choose how to love. Love is love. It is what it is. Love is its own entity with its own definitions and it can not be withheld. Its nature is huge and boundless, able to move through stone walls, eddying into the deepest, darkest of places. Love can soothe a soul. If you let it.

Don't hold back today. Don't set up impossible rules for love and expression. Don't ever think anyone is not worthy of love. There's a reason why love is free.

feeling better

Something out there / Where love is your only friend and/
We are the ones / That will make you feel better

~ Make You Feel Better by Red Hot Chili Peppers
The 4 of Water in its upright state indicates a period of apathy, perhaps a little too much introspection, and certainly feeling jaded with life. Finding the same card in reverse does indeed feel better. Those cups that hold all that you've been holding can finally be over turned and emptied out. The emptiness becomes a place of possibilities. Life doesn't feel so constricted or . . .

Today, let yourself be open to this emptiness, this place of possibilities. It will feed a world-weary soul. Again, my favorite cure, go outside. Be in Nature, in whatever season. Let that environment be what it is, showing beauty in its many permutations. Let it inform your being, your soul, so that you feel alive again.

Touch the earth. Enjoy a fine wine or delightful cuppa. Be of even temper and not manic, but present and filled with gratitude. Be well.

You tell me that you love me so / You tell me that you care
But when I need you / Baby, you're never there

~ Never There by Cake
Our Daughter of Water is feeling high and dry. She's got expectations, she's got dreams, but they're lost in some malaise or another. It could be she's feeling stood up and unsupported. It could be the Artist's Block or loss of the Inner Child. Rather feeling buoyant and in the flow, she's hit a sand bar. Our Daughter of Water will need to wait out the tide, wait for the waters to rise again so she can sail on.

This might be a day when you feel dried out, bereft of dreams, at a loss. You've run aground and you too will need to wait out the tide. What to do when stranded? Well. We can borrow from Susun Weed, Step 0: Do Nothing. (This isn't Life or Death right now.) Do the simplest of things to tend to self, occupy the hang time, take care of what's in need of being taken care of. Before you know it, the water rises and lifts you off that sandy impediment allowing for the free flow.

Keep it simple today. Do what you can rather than brooding over what can't be done. Try to cultivate solitude over feeling alone. There are gifts in even these stranded moments.

To be human is to become visible while carrying
what it is hidden as a gift to others.

~ What to Remember When Waking by David Whyte
Our Mother of Earth has returned with her usual wit and earthy wisdom. She is the one to turn to when things seem unformed, ungrounded, up in the air. She will give wings feet to land on and a hearty meal to boot. Our Mother of Earth is a person of comfort and ease, but not complacency. You still need a plan to get through this day.

And this is where our Mother of Earth shines should even a plan fall through. She is able to examine her environment and pull together what she can to accomplish a goal. Is something not going smoothly at the work place? Look into that bag of tricks to redirect what's going on. Dinner running late? Find that quick and easy recipe using peanut butter and rice (or some such combination as exists in the kitchen in that moment). Some piece of machinery thing on the blink? Utilize another tool that might still get the job done. You get the idea.

The point is not to cave in the face of challenges and obstacles. Our Mother of Earth is splendidly resourceful. And so are you. Let it be your hidden gift to others today.

dial it back a bit

It's all too much for me to take
The love that's shining all around here

~ It's All Too Much by George Harrison
Before I dive in, a quick note. In laying out cards for Tarot readings, sometimes the cards will turn up in reverse. That is, the image appears upside down to the reader. (Which is why the best way to flip a Tarot card laid on the table is from one side and not end over end.) There are round Tarot decks that have beautiful permutations of this in that the image might lean to the right or the left as well as show in reverse. Leaning to the right often indicates an exaggeration of the card's energies, while leaning to the left means an underdevelopment of them. The Everyday Tarot has been created into fun little squares to make those leanings a little clearer for the reader. Let's see how this goes, shall we?

Today, The Empress parades in with a huge entourage of beauty and flowers and bright colors and soft flowy things. A veritable torrent of abundance. She is brash and determined. You will have more than you need. She'll see to it. Unfortunately, too much of a good thing goes bad quickly. Enforced creativity becomes unbalanced as other things fall to the wayside. In the insane effort of making more than necessary, one runs out of room, becomes forgetful, gets burned out.

It might be a good idea to redistribute your abundance. If it's stuff, give it or sell it. If it's time, find a way to spend it wisely. If it's unrestrained creativity, channel it. Find the balance in creating what's needed and then some without waste or overwhelm.

All I want is the truth, gimme some truth
~ Gimme Some Truth by John Lennon
The problem with truth is it's all over the place. Truth is often based on perspective. Sometimes, experience. And so the task here today is to stand in your truth. Because that is what needs to be done.

Perhaps you've been waffling over an issue for some time. It's been hard to make a decision. Maybe there have been too many "truths" hanging around in the periphery, all of which seem to carry some weight.

The Ace of Air helps a person rationalize and think clearly in the midst of confusion. However, even with this cerebral element, it's a good idea to determine how you feel about your decision, your truth. If it feels good, if you can stand in it with conviction, then it is now your truth and you can move forward with a sense of certainty.

Stand tall. Take hold of that which serves you best. Find your truth and move forward. Standing in your truth serves the world.
