in between

I don't want you / But I hate to lose you
You got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea

~ Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea written by
Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler
Well, this is a fine pickle. The Devil likes a good pickle. Especially if you're in it. The Devil, and I'm avoiding gender specifics here, has a feeling of entrapment, having snared yourself between one thing and another. Both options have their merits. And drawbacks. You're possibly at a point where weighing pros and cons simply causes more anxiety. That, my friend, is exactly where The Devil wants you. Because, if you're stuck here, then you won't move forward with anything. A bedeviling situation.

So. What to do?

Well. Lighten up. The flip side of The Devil is humor. Tone down the seriousness of your circumstance. It's not always easy to find a good laugh while in the middle of a grim moment, but the magic of human wit abounds (if you're lucky). Use that magic. In using your wit, you may indeed out wit The Devil and shake yourself free of the shackles that bind.
