blue moon musings

Sit beside a mountain stream
See her waters rise
Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies

~ Mother Nature's Son (or Daughter)
by Lennon and Mccartney
Oh, go outside, would you? Forget the weather, forget the precipitation, forget the mud or snow ~ just go. Listen to the ambient sounds regardless of the environment. Where you stand is the "nature" of your place. See things as if for the first time, even if you've passed by them a million times. Sing out loud and ignore the reactions of the crowd. Who knows. Maybe they'll sing along.

Our Daughter of Water rides on the currents of deep connection. She trusts the flow of things. She is joyful in it. Our Daughter wants to see you enjoying life, she wants to see you make stuff ~ even if it's just dinner. Prepare that meal, no matter how simple, as if it is sacred food for the gods. Are crayons the only art supply you've got? Break 'em out, sweet pea! Draw anything without agenda or concern. Create for the sake of creating.

What do Nature and Creation have to do with each other? They work together, they inform each other, they are symbiotic. And our Daughter of Water stands at the interstices, feeling the currents of both and moving along gently.

So.

Find yourself some nature to be in. Be in the flow of things. Sense your way through the day using your whole being. Sketch, write, sing, dance, bake ~ make something, create. You are a child of the Universe and the Universe is waiting for you to sing.

work

Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work,
which is standing still and learning to be astonished.

~ Messenger by Mary Oliver
How sweet to pull this card on a Monday. Because there is work to do. I rather do wish it were just standing still and being astonished (not that one couldn't make room for that even on the busiest of days), but the 3 of Earth hints at a little more activity.

Mainly, the focus is on teamwork. You may find yourself unable to get much done unless you have a cadre of people at your side. This will require some preparation and assessing of individual skills and then delegation in an egalitarian manner. No one person is in charge. Today's endeavor is truly a group effort. From erecting buildings to managing retail to getting your people out the door with all necessities for the day, you must find your place in this work and do that thing well. Falter on your part of the project and things may, indeed, fall apart.

So.

Do your work. Know that the work you do affects others. If you do your work with attention and perseverance, others will fall into doing the same. And then everyone can have a lovely day in stillness and astonishment.

rise

I want to believe I am looking into the white fire
of a great mystery.

~ The Ponds by Mary Oliver
Our Daughter of Fire is rising up from the ashes today ~ like the Phoenix in that accompanying card pulled from this deck. Perhaps she's made some bold, impulsive moves and shaking off the ashes of some past karma to rise with fiery wings. Maybe she's decided to leave some people in the dust ~ the critics and naysayers ~ in order to soar and find her own path.

No matter.

Our Daughter of Fire is looking up, perhaps into that white fire of a great mystery. There's nothing holding her down, nothing to get in her way, except her own doubts and misgivings. And those have burned up in those flaming wings, haven't they?

So.

Let yourself move forward with some sense of integrity and confidence. There's nothing holding you back. Get out of your own way and soar.

Scorpio rules

Please be a sexaholic
~ Princes Familiar by Alanis Morrisette
There is an odd and ancient connection between Sex and Death. It is a mystery why the connection exists. La petite mort. A brief loss of consciousness, blacking out, the small death. A thing we do everyday in one way or another. Each death a release and a new beginning, each choice a death to one way and an opening to another.

I regret to inform you this will all sound like drivel, pulling at straws, but you know I'm not entirely from left field here.

The thing with Scorpio and Death is they know you'll come back. Every loss suffered is an opportunity to bounce back with a little more awareness and wisdom. This is a card for today so let's not get unhinged on the Big Karma thing of Death and Rebirth. It's likely to be a day of small deaths and rebirths. It may be a day of letting a few things go to make room for something better. There may be an opportunity of growth through giving up. Or, maybe, just maybe, there's time for some sex. Scorpio is no fool.

So.

Let Death be what it's going to be. Let go, lose, give up. In all these actions know something will be gained ~ clarity, peace of mind, maybe an orgasm or two.

voices

I can see them talking but I only hear the voices in
my head. Waiting for the moment they'll be calling to me.

~ Siren, theme from Home Fires by Samuel Sim
Hear them? Those voices? It may not seem like they are yours, but they are. They are voices of criticism and fears and doubts and worries all likely adopted from other folks, well-meaning or otherwise. As a result, these voices of yours cause all manner of distress and consternation, in constant conflict. You may feel paralyzed, frozen into place and unable to make any decision, let alone sensible ones.

It is in these moments it's easy to forget to breathe. However, that is exactly a good place to start. (Because, if you think on it, the Element here is Air.) Take one good breath in and then exhale deeply, like a sigh. There. That wasn't so bad, was it? That, my friends, is a thing one can do without too much thinking. By the way, it would be the next best thing to do: stop thinking. Or rather, recognize the over-thinking and then redirect those thoughts because you can never really stop thinking. Are you still with me?

Good.

The point is, only you can manage these criticisms, fear, doubts, and worries. They're adopted from odd various places ~ memories, experiences, events, mental ramblings of what-if's. They are the ugly, dysfunctional, ill-formed children who need to be embraced, understood, and transformed. Find help and healthy coping methods as needed, but ultimately the job is still yours for today.

right action

Have I lived enough? Have I loved enough?
Have I considered Right Action enough, have I come to
any conclusion?

~ The Gardener by Mary Oliver
Well. Judgment. It is an awakening of sorts, a realization. It is a journey of a thousand miles and when you get there, oh my, the view is glorious! What have you been working through or with? What has been a burden to shoulder for so long? Shrug now, shake it off. Because you are being smiled upon today.

So.

It'll feel like a New Day today. Well, let it feel that way. Embrace it. Especially if you've been embracing The Suck up until now.

ground control

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

~ Space Oddity, David Bowie
This, by golly, is a day to grab some ground. Our Son of Air might be flying off the handle, feeling a bit uprooted, ungrounded, floating aimlessly. Which is a thing the Son of Air does sometimes. No big deal.

There are a couple of things to remember here: the Element and the Person (or Court, if using ye olde RWS model). The element of Air is typically ephemeral ~ sometimes a gentle breeze, other times a gale-force wind. I'm not sure of the actual science of moving Air, but energetically speaking, if it is not tethered to Earth in some way, well, stuff happens. And it happens in two ways. Either one is not grounded and is an airhead for the day ~ floating, oblivious. Or the ungrounded individual acts more like a tornado only touching down to earth to do damage. The only real cure for both is standing in place and grounding.

With a mind that may be going a mile a minute, it might be a good day for some physical, tactile activities ~ a walk, knitting, spinning wool, yoga (these are just a few of my tools out of the hat). If a mind is simply floating around, some focused activities might come into play ~ sewing embroidery, journal writing/sketching, learning a new thing or doing research (again, just a few of my tools). Doing these simple things may avert the disaster our Son of Air might become when not touching the ground.

hold

To a see a World in a grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wildflower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in a hour.

~ Auguries of Innocence by William Blake
The World, the Earth, sleeps a little longer in our neck of the woods. Finding Heaven in a Wildflower might be a tall order as a result. However, finding it in other things might not be so difficult. A snowflake, the bare twig, the brown leaf poking through the snow. It might be a slow and easy day. Which isn't saying much for such a big card of culmination, completion, and wholeness.

There doesn't need to be a parade or fanfare coming to this simple, humble place. Being present is enough. Noticing is enough. Slow down. Allow yourself the pleasure of holding Infinity and Eternity for you have arrived and there is nothing more to do.

haves/have nots

I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a pauper
Greedy little people in a sea of distress
Keep your more to receive your less
Unimpressed by material excess
Love is free love me say hell yes

~ Give It Away, Red Hot Chili Peppers
What have you got to give? What have you got to receive? The 6 of Earth is that fulcrum between having and not having, that give and take. As much as you might desire what someone has another someone desires what you have. Giving doesn't necessarily have to be material, by the way. Knowledge is a fine thing to share. Time, easily spent, is another share-worthy item. You don't have to give it all to everyone either. It's not necessary to deplete your bank account, financially or spiritually, in order to give.

Share what you can when you can. On the other side of that sharing coin, be ready to receive as the 6 of Earth isn't a one-sided deal. Give from the heart and receive gratitude, love, delight. And those things spread, by golly. What better contagion than love?

So.

If you've got and can give, today might be a good day to engage the exchange. If you've not got and need, know that the getting is good. However, giving for the sake of getting isn't an attractive aspect. Nor is expecting to receive because of not having. There is a little humble work to be done here at either end of the spectrum. As always, better to stand at center and respond as needed.

patience

Patience comes to the bones before it takes root in
the heart as another good idea.

~ Patience by Mary Oliver
Strength comes to us today in the form of patience. Which is another good idea as mentioned by Ms. Oliver. It's a good idea because plans are shifting in other directions. It's a good idea because people in your life aren't behaving as they usually do (which, actually, might be okay). It's a good idea because there is work ahead and it isn't all going to be done in one day. Even if this card only speaks to today.

Patience requires paying attention and listening and responding (not reacting). It requires a slow, steady step, direct eye contact, and a soothing voice in order to relate to the beast that is Turmoil, Trouble, Tension. Flinch or look away and that beast will either fight or take flight. And you really don't want it to go away. It's a necessary thing, this beast. It is here to fortify your courage and integrity. It shouldn't be caged either. As that only creates more tension.

Better to circle with this challenge for today in a state of patience, of wait-and-see, and respond with gentleness as it comes around. Reach out and touch it, let it know its value in this moment, that you are here to help each other rise. It's not necessary to tame the beast, but it is necessary to become friends with it.

So.

As mentioned, be patient. Be patient with the late train, the slow server, the tantrum that can't be quelled all too easily. Lose it and all will be lost for today.

the river

Sixteen candles there on my wall
And here am I, the biggest fool of them all

~ Take Me To the River by Talking Heads
Are you drowning in too many choices, keeping your head above decisions yet to be made? The 7 of Water is a state of overwhelm, a word that has become a noun over the years. Overwhelm is a thing we bump up against when it's all just too much. You get to define it.

I'll hazard a guess that this particular overwhelm is emotional in nature, because, y'know, Water. It's likely there is some emotional attachment to the choices before you. You simply can't decide because they all look so good and you want them all. Or bad and want none of them. Sorry, kitten. A choice must be made in order to keep your head above these waters.

So.

Sit with it a little longer, whatever it is, but do make the best decision possible under the circumstances. It will not be easy, thanks to the emotional attachment, but once that choice is made, it could be smooth sailing the rest of the day. It's when you shirk that decision-making duty that the river will carry you into the rapids with a chuckle. Hang back. Be cool. Take the tiller. You're the captain so it's up to you to sail this boat.

her small wild prince

wherever the white moon fancies her small wild prince --
field after field after field

~ Harvest Moon -- The Mockingbird Sings in the Night
by Mary Oliver
The Moon is calling for a little adventure today. You needn't go far. A meditation, a nap time dream, a day dream ~ these are all you'll need. You can pack light. You can dress anyway you like (better to journey in comfort rather than preparedness ~ Mt. Everest can be scaled in jammies just fine). Let your imagination carry you places known and unknown. Bring back gifts and visions and words. Put them to paper or canvas or digital image as an Adventure Manifestation. Been there done that and you can go again, anytime you like. You've got proof.

Not that proof is necessary, of course. It's your adventure.

The thing is to let your mind wander awhile. Let it slide by the routine and side-step the grind. Ride some moonbeams with no destination, walk the magical mangata on the waves to Nowhere. When you get back, you'll have sweet stories to share. Or not. They can be all yours to savor for later.

deep solitude

While I was thinking this I happened to be standing
just outside my door, with notebook open,
which is the way I begin every morning.

~ I Happened to Be Standing by Mary Oliver
What does your soul need today? Could there be a need to retreat from the cacophony of the world? The Hermit will guide you to that peaceful place, a space of solitude. A space fertile with possibilities in Nothingness. It helps to be comfortable with being alone and doing Nothing.

I may have mentioned it takes a lot of work to do Nothing. To stand, right where you are, and simply Be, letting the world have its way with itself. To not intercede or fix or clean up the mess. That simply is not your job today. It is your job to do Nothing.

Distractions like Netflix or internet surfing or sorting buttons is fine, but wouldn't it be nice to immerse yourself in some creative endeavor? It doesn't have to be art or a novel. Crayons on craft paper, a pen and an old half-used composition notebook, listening intently to some Classical music (which might include Hendrix) . . . simple, accessible bits of creativity done alone and without distraction.

So.

Build your blanket fort and retreat with a flashlight and a favorite book. Don't forget the tea. And maybe some good chocolate. Let the world outside swirl about. You need this today. Make space and time for it ~ even if only for a few minutes.

pure imagination

Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of pure imagination

~ Pure Imagination, Newley & Bricusse
Our Daughter of Fire is in her world of, you guessed it: Imagination. She is on fire with brilliant ideas and lofty dreams. And isn't that a nice place to be today? It's not necessary to be in a New Year to enter this sweet realm. You can enter any time you want. And there are no nasty resolutions to contend with.

So.

Simply.

Let yourself be in this place of Imagination today. Don't plan so much as stay open and curious to the many possibilities you bump into during your imaginary meanderings. (Leave the planning to others like The Emperor or 3 of Earth.) Catch the spark of one or two and enjoy the ride. Our Daughter of Fire will be riding along with you. Imaginary rides are best with good company.
