ritual of reconstruction

I go down to the edge of the sea.
How everything shines in the morning light!

~ Breakage by Mary Oliver
It's time we addressed The Hierophant in the room. (Gods! I've been waiting to write that. Okay. Back to work.) This arcana is maligned by free thinkers and wild spirits as the Oppressive Institution of ________ (fill in the oppressive institution of choice ~ religion, academia, corporation). It is often viewed as stifling, constricting, dry, rote with traditions that feel empty, stale, and lifeless.

In short, The Hierophant has a bad reputation for restraining freedom of expression and withholding knowledge.

Let's take a moment and reframe The Heirophant. Let's begin by internalizing this being as Inner Guidance or Teacher. Now. Because The Hierophant is you, you know what s/he knows. And if there's something you don't know, you can be sure to be guided in the right direction to learn what you don't know. That direction might be a book or a song or a professor or Youtube. In this way of owning The Hierophant, you learn about yourself. You learn what works for you and what doesn't. You learn to trust your intuition. You engage in the ritual of putting yourself back together because only you know what's necessary for growth and healing (even if it's not abundantly clear at that moment). That includes finding genuinely helpful, knowledgeable folks. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The Hierophant does not need to be the outside oppressor. Invite and embrace your Inner Guidance in this wabi sabi life. It's not likely to steer you wrong.

got hope?

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away

~ High Hopes, Pink Floyd (sans Waters, I believe)
Okay. Brace yourself. The 5 of Earth isn't a fun ride. In fact, it's not much of a ride at all. Because it's frozen. Not going anywhere. However it does set into motion a crisis of faith. What can you trust when shit hits the fan? What can you trust when it seems there are no choices? When you are frozen in place, paralyzed by doubt and fear.

This is going to sound grossly Pollyanna, but you can trust hope. Esperanza.

With a little hope, you might be able, perhaps, to move in very small ways, melt the frozen ground beneath you. To take one step. While you're in the middle of the situation, it won't feel like much is getting done, but it's something.

The other best action of 5 of Earth is simply to Do Nothing. This might just be day to ride stuff out. No shame in it. Not all aspects of life can be controlled by humans. When you've emerged from that frozen tundra, you'll be the wiser. You might even be able to help someone process in a similar environment. Having a bit of hope is a good start.

not-so-instant karma

Instant Karma's gonna get you
~ Instant Karma, John Lennon
Blessedly, karma isn't instant. Karma is something that happens over a long period of time, life times, even. The Justice card is only here for today though. Which makes the day a little less daunting in seeking and acting in rightness.

However . . .

What you do today, even if just for today, will impact your tomorrow.

So.

Act kindly. Think carefully before putting something into motion. One word said in the wrong tone can't be unsaid. Stand in your rightness, but don't impose it on others.

seeing angels

only if there are angels in your head will you ever,
possibly, see one

~ The World I Live In, Mary Oliver
I often couple a pull with another oracle or Tarot. Sometimes, it packages a little more information than drawing just the one card. Gateway of Innocence from Melllissae Lucia's Oracle of Initiation joined the ride with our Daughter of Fire this morning. She dances with innocence at that gateway, looking up, looking for angels. She is on fire with that possibility and other possibilities. Because that's her raison d'ĂȘtre ~ standing in Potentiality.

What do you want to bring into being? What is the thing you must do today? (One card, one day ~ doesn't have to be life changing.) Where does your potential lie?

Daughter of Fire asks you to examine these queries with a curious mind. If you can imagine a thing, you can manifest a thing. Luckily, we humans don't blink what we want into existence. Luckily, there are events that occur between Here and There. So we learn along the way or engineer a little course correction if necessary. And that, my friends, is more interesting than simply attaining a goal.

So.

Look up. Look around. Let the occasional angel in your head loose ~ so you can possibly see it.

black friday

We believe in ancient lies
We compete until we die

~ Competition Song, Pennywise
Ahem. I'll state the obvious (for 'Mericans, at least): it's Black Friday. It is, supposedly, the biggest, most infamous shopping day of the year when folks are lined up in front of shopping institutions of choice to get flat-screen TVs at greatly discounted prices for . . . xmas. Well. Maybe not so much anymore, thanks to Amazon. In which case, you may shop at leisure from home in your underwear. If that's your thing.

What is the thing with the 5 of Air, again, is competition, but it may not be so much with other people. It may have more to do with your interaction with your environment, your tiny corner of Life. Events may not unfold so neatly today. Situations will arise. Movement toward any sense of completion will occur in fits and starts. You may just want to sit this day out. If you have that option, take it.

If you don't. Well, that's another matter.

Do what you can to not be the cause of friction. Fly under the radar. Mind your own business. And then you will not be a cross purposes with others' business. Do whatever you can to keep it simple today.

slight miscalculations

Barons of Suburbia I have heard you pray
Before you devour her

~ Barons of Suburbia, Tori Amos
Our Daughter of Earth returns a little sooner than planned. But then, who has a real plan anyway? The thing is she's back and she's got a lot on her mind. Which means she might forget to gather herself together, get herself out of her head. Couple that with heading into a major American holiday and there's a fair recipe for disaster.

Going back to our Ancestors is speculation at best. We have too much now. We have access to a million thoughts, ideas, dreams. And choices! Choosing drawer pulls becomes a daunting process. Or coffee. First World problems, right? But I digress . . . Going back to what our Ancestors did is Make Believe, it's play acting. However, there is something in that activity. Our DNA picks up on those threads and gives 'em a tug. Something clicks into motion and we stand naked in the dark (only in a proverbial sense, keep your shirt on) staring awestruck up into the stars. Communion.

It is what Ritual does.

So.

Hone in on your personal rituals. Pluck the strings of your Ancestors to hear what songs they have for you. Gather your people and be in good relations. One thing our Daughter of Earth likes is practicality. Lighting a candle will do. Preparing meals with intention will also do. Let the warp and weft of your day be Sacred and it will be so.

work

And what is the work of this God?
~ Feri Flower Prayer, Victor Anderson
The 8 of Earth is about applying one's self fully to one's task. There might be a learning curve, but that's okay. We've all started somewhere. What's important is doing the work with attention, diligence, and perseverance.

Monkeytasking (multitasking) isn't a way to approach the work involved with the 8 of Earth. Especially if the whole gig is new to you. As this card carries an apprenticeship feel to it, it's likely that's the case. Or it's not familiar to you, not your usual department. Set aside what you know and be prepared to learn something new.

So, kitten . . .

Settle in and do the work. Align yourself to this task, whatever it may be, so that the work becomes your Work in this world.

and the horse you rode in on

We are the champions, we are the champions
No time for losers 'cause we are the champions of the world

~ We Are the Champions, Queen
In contrast to yesterday's pull, the 6 of Fire asks one to toot one's own horn. Perhaps the past few days have been rife with challenges. Some easily overcome, others might have required an escape with a mild limp. No matter. The 6 of Fire speaks of triumph, victory, accolades won.

It's just for today, though. So enjoy your minor victory. Whether it's a triumph over some bad habit or scoring Park Place in Monopoly or the cat has finally figured out how to use the can opener ~ it's a win/win. Well. Maybe not in Monopoly, but you get the idea.

The thing is, your victory begets the victories of others. The energetic surge of someone riding the big wave of acclaim affects folks. You might inspire someone to take action in their own life. It's a ripple effect.

So.

Go big. Be brave. Be proud of your own progress. In that simple, humble pride you become an example of how to win with grace.

keeping quiet

For once on the face of the earth,
let's not speak in any language;
let's stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

~ Keeping Quiet, Pablo Neruda
A reclined figure can be seen in the four feathers of Air. He is, indeed, keeping quiet. There is nothing wrong with having nothing to say right now. Sometimes, it's best to step back, step off, and let the whirling dervish of a moment spin off on its own. Shhhh! Quiet. Listen. Not to the words you could have said and, certainly, not to the words that have been said.

Listen to Nothing. Listen to the breeze in the trees or the ocean or rocks singing (if you listen deeply enough).

In time, the sounds of the Universe might be heard. And won't that be nicer than what could have been said?

So.

Chill-ax, as my Youths say. Stake out your space, build a blanket fort (don't forget the pillows and chocolate), and shut out the noise for awhile. Do not move your arms so much. Let them hold a quiet moment. Let them hold something soft. And breathe.

of phenomenal women

I am a woman
Phenomenally.

~ Phenomenal Woman, Maya Angelou
Apologies, gentlemen. It's Ladies' Day with the 3 of Water today. I've bumped into an idea that women are the glue that holds society together. Women gather in church socials and yoga studios and basements. Women gather, usually, peaceably, but can be otherwise if the situation calls for a little feminine aggression. Because we nurture and protect.

Be at peace with your sister women today. Gather together. Form a plan. Exchange ideas. Let these things stir about in that womanly cauldron of inspiration, in a cozy place. Once steeped and ready . . .

Take it out into the world. Phenomenal women get results when they work together. So go be phenomenal.

a little love

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart

~ Jackie DeShannon
Where The Lovers is the big love, the 2 of Water is that little love. A smile, a kind word, the warm hug, emotional comfort. It is simple human everyday love. No long lost re-connections, just the Everyday.

What can you do today to help someone out? Who could use a little more of your attention?
Where can you share your love?

Simple questions for a simple card.

fly

Come fly with me, we'll fly, we'll fly
Pack up let's fly away

~ Come Fly With Me, Jimmy Van Heusen & Sammy Cahn
Our Son of Air wants to go places today and he doesn't want to go alone. He's not typically a romantic fellow, but he'll be glad to sweep you off your feet and whisk you away to somewhere. Even if it's Home Depot.

Were you planning on a quiet day at home? Forget it, buttercup. Strap on those boots, throw on a coat, and be ready to go. Because our Son of Air will only wait so long. And he really does want you to join him.

Perhaps getting out would be best anyway. Have you been mired in one thing or another? Have you been brooding? Sedentary? Stuck? Well, it's time to get unstuck. Which can't be done in a slanket watching Netflix all day.

Hop into that Mustang and go somewhere fun. With the Son of Air, there'll be no shortage of adventures and delight.

So.

Go.

hanging on

Set me free, why don't cha, babe
Get out of my life, why don't cha, babe
'Cause you don't really love me
You just keep me hanging on

~ You Keep Me Hanging On by The Supremes
What are you hanging around for? What's had you in a grasp for awhile? Well, cupcakes, I'm here to tell you you're hanging out awhile longer. That is the deal with The Hanged One.

The tough task is to let it all Be for now. As a person who prefers some level of control in life, it is indeed an inconvenience. If you have a similar disposition, know that I sympathize. However, that doesn't negate the process. Because this hang time is part of the process.

What we control freaks get to do is spend a little time looking at a situation differently. In doing so, we might pick up on a few fine points that might have been missed otherwise.

So.

Rather than struggle for control in the Upside Down World, let yourself  navigate this time and space of stasis. It's only for today, remember, and it may all change by midnight. Like a carriage back into a pumpkin. Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.

meanwhile, back on Earth

There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds

~ Starman by David Bowie
Have your feet hit the ground yet? It's been a surreal few days ~ especially with the time change in many places. You never really get that hour back. It's still the same 24 hours in a day. It's just shifted slightly to the left which puts a day off kilter.

And so our Daughter of Earth strolls in, saunters even, to let us know it's all fine to hang out with the Starman, but it's best to do it with feet on the ground. She is typically careful with her money and resources and expects no less of others. So keep your wits about you. Don't run off to the latest sale purchasing unnecessary items. Why take up precious space in your home? Or decide to pass them on to some unsuspecting person? Or, worse yet, end up discarding them?

Got lofty ideas? Fine. Let them float awhile until they can be manifested into reality. Which requires certain care and steps (because we live on the planet Earth and those are the rules here, Starbaby). Our Daughter of Earth doesn't rush into things even with a head full of ideas and dreams. They are neatly filed away until certain connections can be made and then work can begin.

So. Take it easy today. Make sure your still standing on the planet Earth. Engage embodiment and don't float around.

the family of things

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

~ Wild Geese by Mary Oliver
It is, perhaps, a good day to be home with family. The work of the week has been done. There is food cooking on the stove. Maybe the fire is lit. Certainly, there is football on the TV. The people under the roof might all be in the same space or quietly sequestered in rooms. No matter, all will gather together later for dinner. For now there is this "place in the family of things."

The 10 of Water is a sweet harmony, a delicious gathering ~ of love, of resources, of place. And there's a happy, bittersweet togetherness that can't be replicated anywhere or anytime else. Flow and connectivity. Despite the hard times or spiky moments, there is still Family.

So.

Be easy in your comfortable place. You've worked for it. Provisions have been made for you and yours, ancestors and descendants. Let your day be filled with a simple harmony.

treasures

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you

~ Time in a Bottle, Jim Croce
Ah, the innocence of past times! With the 6 of Water, it seems the day for revisiting them. Things were easier then, weren't they? Or, at least, they're best remembered that way. It's all fine to feel the nostalgia, but much in life changes. At an alarming rate, I might add. Which may have one clinging to a delicious past.

So.

It might be a good day to have a tea party with a younger someone. Share some of your stories of the salad days so that they may pass them on. Don't embellish too much, don't exaggerate. It'll be nice if the truth of your perception could be retained for those future folk without telling tall tales.

Otherwise, enjoy a day of simple innocence and ease. Make new salad days.
