fences

Let me be by myself in the evening breeze
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees

~ Don't Fence Me In, Cole Porter
The 4 of Air addresses a need for fences despite what the song says. However, in some ways, making good boundaries is liberating, isn't it? The 4 of Air is a time out, a reprieve, a restorative. I suspect it's necessary on a variety of levels today.

We've been bombarded with far too many stressful current events ~ world wide and, perhaps, personally. Holing up somewhere comfortable and safe for a few hours is no cause for shame. The body needs to stop running adrenals, the mind needs to let thoughts drift aimlessly (trying to have "no thoughts" adds to the stress, so just let 'em drift by like clouds in the sky), the spirit needs to reconnect to Source. And it simply can't be done constantly on the run. All the time. Which is redundant, but the point must be made: We need rest.

What does resting look like to you? It could be a nap. Maybe it's turning off all media to listen to the murmur of any tree let alone cottonwoods. It's possible life has been rife with simply too much company and solitude is the only balm for a world-weary soul. Whatever your time out needs ~ tea, cozy blanket, slippers, a book (avoid the streaming TV), a little RAM playing softly in the background ~ whatever your rest needs, make it a priority to take it. No one, and I mean, NO ONE will take that rest for you.
